바다에의 열망(존 메이스필드)

바다에의 열망                           - 존 메이스필드   나는 아무래도 다시 바다로 가야겠다. 그 외로운 바다와 하늘로 가야겠다. 키 큰 배 한 척과 방향 잡을 별 하나와 그리고 물살을 차는 바퀴와 바람의 노래와 흔들리는 흰 돛만 있으면 그만이다. 수면에 깔리는 잿빛 노을 또는 동트는 잿빛 아침만 있으면 된다.   나는 아무래도 다시 바다로 가야겠다. 혹은 거칠게 혹은 또 맑게 내가 마다하지 못할 그런 목소리로 흐르는 물결이 나를 부른다. 흰 구름 떠도는 바람 찬 날이면 된다. 그리고 흩날리는 물보라와 부풀어 오르는 물거품, 갈매기의 울음소리만 있으면 그만이다.   나는 아무래도 다시 바다로 가야겠다. 떠도는 집시의 신세로 칼날 같은 바람이 부는 곳, 갈매기가 가는 길, 고래가 가는 길을 나도 가야겠다. 껄껄대는 뱃놈들의 신나는 이야기와 그리고 기나긴 당번 시간이 끝난 뒤의 깊은 잠과 달콤한 꿈만 내게 있으면 그만이다.   ======================================== "Sea-Fever"   I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.     I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.     I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.     By John Masefield (1878-1967).
